Bình An, Sai Đi, Nhận Thánh Thần, và Ơn Tha Tội (Ga 20:19-23)

Thánh Gioan kể rằng: Chúa Giêsu thổi hơi trên các tông đồ và nói “các con hãy nhận lấy Thánh Thần” (Ga 20:22), và sự kiện này khác với chi tiết Thánh Luca viết lại trong ngày Lễ Hiện Xuống đầu tiên (Cv 2:1-11).  Sự khác biệt này, theo Gioan, không phải là phủ nhận những sự lạ đã xẩy ra trong ngày Chúa Thánh Thần Hiện Xuống vì Gioan chỉ tường thuật về những gì đã xảy ra trước khi Chúa Giêsu về trời (Ga 20:30-31).  

Chữ thổi hơi chỉ được dùng hai lần trong Thánh Kinh: lần đầu tiên là khi Chúa tạo dựng nên con người từ bụi đất, thổi sinh khí vào lỗ mũi, và con người trở nên một sinh vật (St 2:7) và lần thứ hai ở Phúc Âm Gioan đoạn đã kể trên.  Dựa vào điểm này, ta có thể nói rằng Chúa Giêsu Kitô Phục Sinh đã ban cho chúng ta một thần khí mới để chúng ta trở thành một tạo vật mới.

“Như Cha đã sai Thầy, thầy cũng sai các con” (Ga 20:21); chữ sai (apostello - đặt để) do Chúa Cha khác với chữ sai (pempo - gửi thác) từ Chúa Giêsu là nền tảng của ý tưởng Thánh Phaolô đã viết: “Có nhiều đặc sủng, nhưng chỉ có một Thánh Thần; có nhiều thứ chức vụ, nhưng chỉ có một Chúa; có nhiều thứ công việc, nhưng chỉ có một Thiên Chúa, là Đấng làm mọi sự trong mọi người.  Sự xuất hiện của Thánh Thần được ban cho từng người, tuỳ theo lợi ích” (1 Cr 12:4-7).   

Chúa Giêsu ban cho các tông đồ ơn bình an; sự bình an này rất cần thiết để các ông vững dạ trong khi gặp khó khăn, thoát mọi tai ương và giặc giã, an toàn trong mọi biến loạn, ăn ở thuận hòa, tâm hồn được thanh thỏa và khi chết được nghỉ ngơi bình an trong tay Chúa.  Bình an ở đây không có nghĩa là đời sống của các ông sẽ được dễ dàng. 

 Chúa Giêsu cũng ban cho các ông Chúa Thánh Thần và nói: “Các con tha tội cho ai, thì tội người ấy được tha, các con cầm tội ai, thì tội người ấy bị cầm lại” (Ga 20:22-23).  Ơn tha thứ mà chúng ta nhận được phát nguồn từ cuộc khổ nạn của Chúa Giêsu và ơn Chúa Thánh Thần; lời kinh ban ơn tha tội của linh mục trong tòa cáo giải cũng nhắc lại điểm ấy. 

Ngày lễ Chúa Thánh Thần Hiện Xuống năm nay nhắc nhở chúng ta rằng nếu chúng ta đã lãnh nhận Chúa Thánh Thần qua phép thêm sức thì chúng ta phải sống đời mình như những người sống trong bình an của Chúa, phải làm chúng nhân như những người đã được ủy thác và sai đi, và sống trong tình yêu thương của Chúa khi chúng tha thứ cho nhau.

Peace, Sending, Receiving the Holy Spirit, and the Forgiveness of Sin (Jn 20:19-23)

Saint John reported that Our Lord Jesus breathed on the disciples and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22), this fact was different from what was mentioned in Luke on the first Pentecost (Acts 2:1-11).  This difference, according to John, did not negate the miraculous happenings at Pentecost because John only wrote about all the events which took place before Our Lord Jesus ascended into heaven (Jn 20:30-31). 

The word “breathe on” existed only twice in the Bible: the first time was during the creation of man from the earth, God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul (Gen 2:7) and the second time was in the verse previously mentioned John’s gospel.  Thus, we could say that the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ had given us a new spirit so that we could become a new creation.

“As the Father has sent me, so I m sending you” (Jn 20:21); the word send (apostello - appoint) from the Father differed from the word send (pempo - to bid a thing to be carried to one) could be used as the foundation to explain what Saint Paul had written: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.  Now to each one, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good (1 Cor 12:4-7).

Our Lord Jesus gave His disciples peace; this peace here was necessary so that the disciples could be confident when they faced difficult situations, were saved from all calamity and havoc of war, freed from all anxieties, lived in harmony, experienced felicity, and rested in the peace of God when they died.  This peace did not mean that their live could be easy.

Our Lord Jesus also gave them peace and said: “If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven” (Jn 20:22-23).  This forgiveness that we received came from the passion of Our Lord Jesus and the grace of the Holy Spirit; the absolution prayer given by the priest in the confessional contained this point.

The feast of Pentecost this year remind us that if we have received the Holy Spirit in confirmation, then we must live in the peace of God, be witnesses as the ones who were commissioned and sent, and live in God’s love when we forgive one another.
